Hayman Island is located 28 km north-east of Shute Harbour and is the northernmost of the Whitsunday Island group. The island is surrounded by marine park and, while not part of the national park, the island remains in a relatively natural state, with the Hayman Island Resort located behind one of the four island beaches. The island has an area of 300 ha, with 8.5 km of shoreline. The centre of the island rises 250 m to Mount Carousel and its slopes are surrounded by predominantly rocky shore, with the four beaches occupying only 2 km of the shoreline.
Barbecue Bay beach (HAY2) is the island's main and longest beach. It is 950 m in length and faces south as it curves around in two parts between Groper Point and the western point, which is site of the boat harbour and marina. The resort is located in the small, flat valley immediately behind the beach, with part of the resort, including its famous swimming pool, literally hanging over the beach. A second smaller valley backs the eastern end of the beach and the island's only road runs from this valley to the resort and on to the marina. The beach consists of a 30 m wide, sandy high tide beach, fronted by sandy tidal flats that extend up to 1.5 km south of the beach. Waves are usually low, owing to the protection afforded by neighbouring Hook Island.
