Hook Island is the second largest island in the Cumberland Group and is located immediately north of Whitsunday Island and 22 km north-east of Shute Harbour. The entire island is a national park and its densely vegetated peaks are the highest in the group, reaching 460 m at Hook Peak. Camping is permitted at three locations on the island including the sole island resort in the south-east of the island. The resort faces across a 500 m wide channel to the northern tip of Whitsunday Island. The resort has two beaches separated by a round hill, on the southern side of which is the underwater observatory. The eastern resort beach (H1) is 150 m long and faces south-east toward Whitsunday Island. It is relatively steep and narrow at high tide, with sand and reef flats exposed at low tide. The resort straddles the 200 m of flatter land that links the two beaches (Fig. 4.50). The western beach (H2) is 200 m long, faces south-west and, being more protected, is fronted by more extensive sand and reef flats extending up to 500 m off the beach.
