Between the Proserpine and O’Connell River mouths is a 13 km long shoreline fronted by low beaches and backed by 2 to 3 km of mangroves, and in places up to 10 km of freshwater marsh. The entire area is part of the low, swampy delta of the Proserpine and O’Connell Rivers, with the Bruce Highway located several kilometres inland. The beaches that form the shore face east to south-east into the northern end of Repulse Bay, making them reasonably well-exposed to the Trades. Most are, however, fronted by extensive low tide bars to sand flats up to several hundred metres wide. Apart from one 4WD track out through the mangroves to New Beach, there is no vehicle access to the shore. Beach 1052 is a more substantial beach, with a foredune up to 200 m wide backing the low high tide beach. The tidal flats transform into an irregular 200 to 300 m wide bar.
