Between the Proserpine and O’Connell River mouths is a 13 km long shoreline fronted by low beaches and backed by 2 to 3 km of mangroves, and in places up to 10 km of freshwater marsh. The entire area is part of the low, swampy delta of the Proserpine and O’Connell Rivers, with the Bruce Highway located several kilometres inland. The beaches that form the shore face east to south-east into the northern end of Repulse Bay, making them reasonably well-exposed to the Trades. Most are, however, fronted by extensive low tide bars to sand flats up to several hundred metres wide. Apart from one 4WD track out through the mangroves to New Beach, there is no vehicle access to the shore. The northern end of New Beach (1051) is an eroding, 2 km long, narrow high tide beach, backed by dense mangroves and fronted by the low energy tidal flats of the Proserpine River, which in places extend over 1 km east of the beach. A tidal creek separates the beach from beach 1052.
