Wallaroo is the ‘port’ for the forming copper mining town of Kadina, located 9 km to the south west. The port was established in lee of Point Hughes, with the copper exports now replaced by a large grain terminal, with a jetty extending 800 m out to deeper water. The crenulate shoreline between Point Hughes and the jetty and the more open Wallaroo Bay provide six low energy beaches for the town.
At Points Hughes the extensive tidal flats to the south give way to narrower sand flats, with seagrass meadows just offshore. Beach 520 extends for 600 m north of the point, and consists of a low energy sand beach fronted by a mixture of sand and cobbles across the 200 wide sand flats, together with intertidal rock reefs to either end. There is a gravel road backing the beach and a car park toward the southern end.
