Cape Catastrophe is the southeastern tip of both the Jussieu and Eyre peninsulas, and marks the demarcation between the more protected gulf waters and shores, and the exposed high energy wind and wave dominated coast that extends from here all the way to Western Australia. Access to this part of the peninsula is via the Memory Bay 4WD track which provides access to five of the ten between Cape Tournefort and Cape Catastrophe. The first two beaches, while facing south and exposed to periodic high waves are moderately protected by West Point and inshore reefs, with wave averaging about 1 m. Beach 804 lies immediately west of the cape and is a 300 m long steep reflective beach, backed by dune covered 20 to 30 m high cliffs, with calcarenite rocks and reefs scattered along the shore. Its neighbour, beach 805 is 400 m long and protected by more extensive reefs extending up to 200 m off the beach (Fig. 4.131). It is backed by 50 to 70 m high cliffs. The Memory Bay track follows the clifftop above beach 805, however as a result of the cliffs access to both beaches requires a steep climb.
