Stamford Hill is a 145 m high north-south trending ridge, which was climbed by Matthew Flinders in 1802 when he surveyed the area. Today a monument to Flinders sits of the crest. The shore to the west of the hill trends to the southwest and contains four beaches. These beaches face almost due west and receive the full brunt of westerly wind waves generated within the bay. As a consequence all are fronted by 200 to 300 m wide sand flats containing 3 to 4 low ridges, and are backed by a narrow high tide beach and usually stable low foredune, with low rocky bluffs to each end, except for 774 which is backed by continuous bluffs. Beach 771, 772, 773 and 774 are 700 m, 800 m, 1.2 km and 900 m long respectively. There is a camping area behind Woodcutters Beach (773).
