Quarantine Bay is located to the lee of Whistler Point and while it is exposed to westerly winds it is moderately sheltered from westerly waves by the reefs, which extend 2.5 km north of the point to Christmas and New Year islands lowering waves to about 1 m along the bay shore. The beach (KI 77) commences 1.5 km east of Whistler Point and curves to the northeast as a 200 m wide series of foredune ridges backed by older transgressive dunes rising to 40 m. It then trends east as a protruding recurved spit capped by transgressive dunes rising to 34 m, that in the east deflects the shallow mouth of the Yellow Rock River. It has a total length of 2.9 km with shallow reefs off the western half and sandy bay floor off the spit section. The waves maintain a low gradient reflective to narrow low tide terrace beach. A vehicle track off the North Yellow Rock Road runs out to the slopes above the southern end of the beach.
