Yellow Rock Beach (KI 78) commences at the shallow sandy river mouth and curves to the northeast, then north for 8.7 km, the longest beach on the west coast. The beach receives refracted westerly waves around the islands, which average about 1.5 m, increasing slightly up the beach. These maintain a continuous low gradient beach and inner transverse bar and rip system with up to 20 rips spaced approximately every 400 m, and a rhythmic outer bar located 200-300 m offshore, with more widely spaced rips. It terminates in the north against the metamorphic rocks that continue north for 4 km to Cape Farewell. The entire beach is backed by some active, though largely vegetated Holocene parabolic dunes that extend up to 2.5 km inland and rise to over 60 m in places. A track off the North Yellow Rock road runs out to a car park just inside the river mouth, with foot access to the beach.
Beach Length: 8.7km
General Hazard Rating: 6/10
