City of Melbourne Bay contains two small curving embayments. Beach KI 19 occupies the northern 250 m wide embayment located at the mouth of the larger Yarra Creek. The beach curves around the western side of the bay for 300 m as a moderately sheltered reflective beach, fronted by a shallow bay floor (Fig. 4.195) containing the gravel and sand deposits of the creek delta, which form intertidal flats. A scarped Pleistocene dune, that has transgressed 1 km from the Cottons Creek beach (KI 21), backs the northern side of the beach. Beach KI 20 occupies the base of the southern 100 m wide embayment and consists of a curving 80 m long strip of high tide sand bordered by rock platforms, with a central sandy section. The main beach is accessible via Skipworths Road.
