The Mueller River flows into an elongated lagoon, which crosses the beach toward the western end of Mueller River Beach. The beach begins around the granite rocks from Beach 53 and runs in a broad south-facing arc for 4.5 km to the scattered rocks just past the river mouth. Past the rocks, Mueller River South Beach continues on for 200 m to another set of rocks. Mueller River can be reached by car on a short gravel road off the (Point Hicks) Lighthouse or Thurra Road. There are small camping and day visitor areas, both located on the western shores of the inlet. It is a short walk over the dune or along the inlet from the road to the beach. The beaches face the south and receive waves averaging 1.5 m. These waves produce a double bar system, with rips cutting the usually detached inner bar every 300 m; then a trough and the outer bar 200 m offshore, which is cut by more widely spaced rips. The South Beach has slightly lower waves, but rocks and reef are present in the surf zone. The entire beach is backed by dunes, which toward the eastern end are very active and have large sandy blowouts up to 2 km long. These blowouts are clearly visible from the river mouth.
