Gale Beach is accessible by 4WD, on the 10 km long Gale Hill track. This track provides the best access to these beaches, other than walking the coast track. At beaches 50 and 51, rocks outcrop sufficiently in the surf to dissipate the waves, so that only low 0.5 m high waves reach the shore. At these two shorter beaches, the beach is steep and there is no bar, with waves breaking by surging up the beach face. Either side however, the inner bars are cut by rip channels every 300 m, with strong, permanent rips against the rocks. A deep trough lies seaward, then the outer bar with more widely spaced rips.
