Carrum Beach forms the northern 2 km of the 9 km long Frankston-Carrum beach. The beach, which is located 200 m west of Carrum railway station, houses the Carrum Surf Life Saving Club, Carrum Sailing Club and Patterson River Yacht Club. The latter is next to the Patterson River mouth and its short entrance walls. The Carrum Surf Life Saving Club patrols the northern section of the beach and was founded in 1937. The beach faces west-south-west and is exposed to all westerly winds and waves. This produces a 200 m wide, three bar system, that is essentially identical to adjoining Seaford and Frankston Beaches. The inner bar is usually highly rhythmic, alternating every 150 m between shallow shoals and rip holes. The second bar is less rhythmic and the outer bar is straighter still. The beach increases in width toward the river entrance walls, which act as a sand trap. Be careful bathing near the river mouth, as there is a deep tidal channel and strong tidal currents in the river and over the adjoining bars. One kilometre south of the surf club is a short, concrete groyne, backed by a large park and car park. This is also a popular summer bathing area. read more
