West of the Merri River mouth is an exposed, high energy section of coast called Armstrong Bay. It extends for 15 km from the river mouth to the low basalt outcrops of Sisters Point. The first 5 km are dominated by dune calcarenite, capped by 20 to 30 m high cliff-top dunes. The Thunder Point walking track provides foot access to the two beaches. It also has some good views of the coast, as well as a display describing the area and its evolution. Three kilometres west of the river mouth are two adjoining, exposed, south-west facing beaches, both bordered by calcarenite headlands and reefs. The first, Beach 502, is 500 m long with reefs dominating either end, and patchy reef off the beach, as well as some calcarenite along the beach. The result is a reef dominated surf with a strong, permanent rip running out the western end of the beach.
Beach Length: 0.5km
General Hazard Rating: 7/10
