Point Upright forms the northern boundary of an open 3.4 km wide east-facing embayment, bordered by Wasp Head and Island to the south. In between is 6 km of curving shoreline containing four beaches (NSW 511-514), the northern two backed by Durras Lake (Fig. 4.367). The small communities of Durras North, Durras Lake and Durras are spread along the bayshore with a total population of 350, all surrounded by Murramarang National Park. The two northern beaches form a near continuous crescent between the point and low rocky point 3 km to the southwest. Durras North Beach (NSW 511) is 1.6 km long and commences is lee of the point where it initially trends west in front of an old cliffline, before curving round to the southwest. It terminates at the usually blocked mouth of Durras Lake where the sand forms a small salient in lee of a reef located 100 m offshore. Waves are low in lee of the point and the beach reflective. As it swings to the south the waves increase and usually six rips dominate the beach down to the entrance. The Durras North settlement and caravan park are located on the northern lake shore just inside the entrance.
