North Beach (LH 14) is the northernmost sand beach on the island. It can only be reached on foot over 140 m high Dawson Ridge, or at low tide around Dawson Point, or by boat. The beach is 500 m long and faces southwest, then trends south as a coral-shingle spit for 100 m (Fig. 4.446). While it is close to the open sea, the coral reefs shield it from most waves. As a result the beach consists of a 20 m wide steep sandy beach, fronted by shallow reef flats, and backed by a series of low foredunes, then densely vegetated slopes. At the eastern end is a shady picnic area, barbeque, shelter and amenities.
