Between Rocky Point and Island Point is an 11 km wide, open bay. For the first 7 km south of Rocky Point is a strip of sandy beach cut by Saltwater Creek and the Mossman River into three beaches: Rocky Point (south), Newell Beach and Cooya. Increasing protection from Island Point, toward the southern end of Cooya Beach, permits mangroves to grow along the shoreline for the next 7 km to Port Douglas. Cooya Beach lies on the south side of the Mossman River and extends to the south for 2 km before the low energy beach gives way to mangrove-covered tidal flats. The beach lies 4 km east of Mossman and a road runs out to the Cooya settlement, which includes a nice foreshore reserve and facilities, but no store. The beach receives low waves and has a steep, narrow high tide beach, while at low tide the sand flats extend up to 500 m off the beach.
