The Port Elliot beach (153) is 700 m long faces east at the jetty and swings round to face south against Commodore Point. Because of the protection afforded the bay waves average 0.5 m increasing slightly toward Freeman Knob. The low waves together with the medium to coarse sand, produce a high, steep beach, with no bar following low waves, and a narrow bar after high waves. These conditions cause the waves to surge strongly up the beach. Regular beach cusps are a feature of the shoreline.

Swimming

This is a relatively safe beach under normal wave conditions. High swell will however produce a very heavy shorebreak. The safest swimming is always at the western surf club end, where waves are always smallest.

Surfing

Usually only a low shorebreak in the bay.

Fishing

The jetty and boundary rocks are the more popular spots to fish. The absence of a bar also allows deep water just off the beach.

General

This is a very accessible, well serviced little bay and beach. It is relatively safe, protected from westerly winds and very popular in summer.
