Cape Thevenard is a distinctive narrow 3 km long 10 to 20 m high calcarenite capped headland, that separates Bosanquet and Murat bays. The western tip of the cape reaches relatively deep water and was chosen last century as a port. Today it remains the port for Ceduna, the last commercial port until Esperance 1 100 km to the west. The small town of Thevenard and the port facilities are located along the centre to western end of the cape. Calcarenite bluffs and low energy beaches and sandflats surround the cape, with vehicle access to all the shore. On the southern side of the cape, the western corner is filled with mangroves. Once free of the mangroves there are four small beaches. Beach 1273 is a 150 m long high tide beach fronted by rock and sand flats extending 300 m off the beach.
