Immediately north of the harbour is the 950 m long main Port Hughes beach (510), which faces west and runs up to the low Harry Point, the first in a series of truncated red longitudinal dunes, which form a series of five points up to Moonta Bay. The beach is backed by a foreshore reserve, road and houses, and fronted by low ridged 200 m wide sand flats.
