The first back beach (1017) lies 2 km north of the headland, and is one of three west facing beaches bordered by 10 m high calcarenite bluffs, and separated by lower bluffs (Fig. 4.151). The gravel road runs along the bluffs behind the beaches, with a parking area at the northern end of beach 1019. Beach 1017 is 300 m long and is fronted by 300 m wide deeper reefs, with permanent rips at either end. The reef diminishes north of the beach and beaches 1018 and 1019 are adjoining 600 m long beaches, with usually an attached inner bar containing permanent rips at either end, and an outer bar 300 m off the beach. The northern ends of both beaches become increasingly dominated by protruding low bluffs and rocks.
