South of Mills Beach southeast facing low bedrock bluffs dominate the coast for 10 km down to Red Banks. The bluffs not only form much of the shoreline, but also result in sections of intertidal rock platforms, reefs and a scattering of rocks along some of the beaches. There are nine sandy beaches along this section, all dominated or controlled by the bluffs and reefs, which generally lower waves to less than 0.5 m, resulting in steep reflective beaches. The Lincoln Highway runs between 2 and 3 km inland, and there is vehicle access to the coast at Poverty Bay, beach 634, and Red Banks, with 4WD tracks leading along the bluffs to the other beaches. Apart form the backing farmland there is no development or facilities. There are three beaches lying 2 km north of Poverty Bay. Beach 628 is a curves round following the backing low bluffs, with reefs off the beach at either end, the southern reefs protruding a right hand surf during higher swell.
Beach Length: 0.85km
