The Cygnet River is the largest river on Kangaroo Island and reaches the coast on the sheltered western shore of Western Cove, resulting in a very low energy shoreline. While much of the 5 km long delta shore is tidal flats, south of the 50 m wide river mouth at Brownlow is a series of four shell beach ridges (KI-14) totalling 1.7 km in length, each separated by small tidal creeks. They are fronted by 400 m wide vegetated sand flats and backed by several hundred metres of scrubby high tide flats. This whole area is an important wetland and is totally undeveloped and not utilised apart from fishing in the river.
