Maupertuis Bay is an open, 16 km wide, southwest facing bay, which is bordered by Cape Du Couedic in the south and Cape Bedout to the north. The bay affords no protection to the predominantly rocky shore, nor its seven beaches. The first four lie south of Rocky River, along the base of a relatively straight, 10 km long section of cliffs, which reach 100 m in height to the south. The first three beaches (KI-136, 137 and 138) are all located at the base of steep cliffs, and consist of discontinuous high tide strips of sand partially covered with rock debris, and fronted by an irregular calcarenite platform. The first (KI-136) is 500 m long, with no access other than down the cliffs. The second (KI-137) is 300 m long with several small bluffs protruding onto the beach, while the third (KI-138) is 800 m long, with some sandy debris slopes providing access from the backing 40 m high cliffs. All three beaches are exposed to waves averaging 2 m, which maintain a 200 to 300 m wide surf zone that breaks over sand and reefs and is dominated by reef-controlled rips.
