Sandy Beach (KI-141) lies at the mouth of Sandy River and can be reached along a 1.5 km walking track from the West Bay Road. This 500 m long beach is backed by active dunes, which both climb the backing 50 m high slopes and blow along the river bed, resulting in the ‘sandy’ name. The beach is bordered by steeply dipping metasedimentary bedrock headlands which extend seaward of the 200 m wide surf zone. Two permanent rips flow out either end of the beach, with a detached bar usually located in the centre (Fig. 5.25).
