South West River mouth is blocked by a 250 m long beach (KI-125). Despite facing due south, the beach receives considerable protection from calcarenite reefs which extend up to 300 m offshore and, together with the western headland, form a 100 m wide channel at the mouth of the embayment (Fig. 5.21). Consequently waves average only 1 m at the beach, which usually has a continuous shallow bar. While conditions are relatively safe at the beach, a single large rip flows out though the channel into the high surf breaking over the reefs.
