Hanson Bay is an open, 8 km wide, south facing embayment containing 12 km of predominantly cliffed, rocky shoreline, with the South West River entering roughly the centre of the bay. It is bordered in the east by Cape Bougher and in the west by Cape Younghusband. The only public access to the bay is along the gravel road to the river, with 4WD tracks also providing access to the three western beaches. There is a car park, water, toilet and sand boat ramp across the beach at the river mouth, together with a few fishing shacks and some cabins, but no other facilities. The eastern beaches can only be reached on foot from the river mouth. Beach KI-122 is located 2 km east of the river mouth. It is a 180 m long, high tide sand and rock beach, backed by a storm boulder beach then steep, partially vegetated, 40 m high bluffs, which partially encircle the beach. A continuous rock platform fronts the beach, which then drops off into deeper water. Higher waves break 100 m seaward of the platform, with one strong rip draining the embayment.
