The Bay of Shoals is circular in shape, with the northern and southern shoreline separated by a small tidal creek. The 9.2 km long northern shore faces southeast and consists of a narrow, low strip of high tide sand (KI-2), fronted by intertidal sand flats, which are vegetated in places and grade bayward into seagrass meadows, with seagrass debris littering the beach. The North Cape Road backs 5 km of this beach. The beach terminates at a small, 50 m wide tidal creek, on the south side of which begins the 4.5 km long, north facing southern beach (KI-3). This beach is similar in form, with the sand flats extending up to 200 m off the beach, before the water is deep enough for the seagrass meadows. It terminates at The Bluff; a 50 m high conical hill. The only access to this beach is on foot from The Bluff car park.
