Bales Beach (2) (KI-94) is located 1.5 km east of the car park and is a 1.9 km long, semi-circular beach, bordered by prominent 200 m long headlands and fronted by 50 to 100 m wide calcarenite rock platforms. High waves move through the 800 m wide gap between the headlands and disperse along the beach, resulting in lower waves to either end, reaching a maximum in the centre of about 1.5 m. These usually maintain a 100 m wide surf zone, with three beach rips in the centre and a continuous bar toward each headland. Larger waves also break on some reefs between the headlands, and during big seas a large rip drains the entire embayment. The beach is backed by dunes, which increase in activity toward the east.
