Black Head is a prominent, 500 m wide, 40 m high sandstone headland. A 3 km long beach (KI-64) runs due east of the head and terminates at a small protruding bluff fronted by calcarenite reefs. The beach receives waves averaging 2 m which maintain rip-dominated inner and outer bars, together with additional reef-controlled rips in the centre and western end of the beach. During normal wave conditions, the rip heads can flow up to 1 km seaward of the beach. Three 4WD tracks wind through the backing vegetated dunes to the rear of the beach and western bluffs.
