On the western side of the gulf are two beaches, one on either side of the bridge. The northern (565) is bordered by the old and new bridges. It is 160 m long, backed by a large floodlit car park, with a shelter on the coarse shelly beach, and a boat ramp on the other side of the old bridge. A few mangroves line the new bridge causeway. These three sandy beaches and low tide sand flats are usually calm, with only the 2 to 3 m tide range causing changes in the shoreline. While there are no waves or rips, the water drops off steeply at high tide, and off the sand flats at low tide, and there are strong tidal currents in the main 400 m wide channel.
