Cape Donnington is the northern tip of the Jussieu Peninsula. At the cape the low energy shore to the west changes dramatically as the coast south of the cape faces due east, exposing it to low swell out of the south, as well as easterly wind waves, with waves usually averaging less than 1 m. Between the Cape Donnington and Cape Catastrophe, 30 km to the south is 40 km of densely vegetated, bedrock dominated shoreline, containing 21 beaches, all within the national park. Apart from basic camping areas at a few beaches there are no other facilities. Only five are accessible by car, another seven by 4WD, with eight having no vehicle access. Cape Colbert beach (783) lies immediately west of Cape Donnington. It is a 400 m long north facing sand beach, bordered by granite rocks, with a fringe of rocks along the base of the beach, then a narrow bar. The road to the Cape Donnington lighthouse clips the eastern end of the beach. Thus is usually a calm beach with the rock posing the greatest risk.
