On the north side of the eastern bay entrance begins the main Baird Bay beach (1087), a 4.9 km west facing protected beach, that begins 600 m north of the bay entrance and extends for 2 km to Baird Bay settlement, and another 2 km into the very protected bay. The beach receives no swell and is fronted by seagrass covered sand flats which narrow to 100 m off the settlement (Fig. 4.161), where the 200 m wide tidal channel for the bay is located.
