Speed Point and Smooth Pool are two low granite headlands, both capped by calcarenite. They are located 4 km apart and protrude seaward to form a southwest to south facing predominately sandy embayment. In addition to the headlands, reef extend for 1 km into the bay north of Speed Point and scattered reefs extend 1.5 km south of Smooth Pool, resulting is substantial wave breaking, and together with wave refraction lower waves to less than 1 m along much of the 4 km long shoreline. There is vehicle access to both headlands, with the centre of the bay shore backed by moderately active sand dunes extending up to 1 km inland. On the tip of Speed Point is a straight 240 m long high tide sand beach (1132) fronted by a 100 m wide intertidal rock platform, with wave breaking heavily across the platform.
