Immediately west of Castles is the massive Chadinga sandhills fronted by a 4.3 km long high energy beach (1328). The beach faces southwest and receives persistent high swell which maintain an inner rip dominated bar, and an outer bar cut by larger rips, the whole surf zone averaging 500 m in width. In addition there are strong permanent rips against the bordering calcarenite bluffs. The active dunes extend up to 3 km inland and are all contained in the Chadinga Conservation Reserve.
