The western end of the bluffs marks the beginning of the 15 km long Dog Fence Beach (1411), one of the longer beaches west of Fowlers Bay. This is an exposed southwest facing high energy beach. The combination of high waves, fine sand and high winds maintains a 400 to 500 m wide three-bar dissipative surf zone, backed by continuous active dunes extending 1 to 2 km inland. In additions the calcarenite reef off the bluffs parallels the first 5 km of shore inducing a slightly lower energy rip dominate inner surf zone (Fig. 4.197). Reefs also occur along the western 3.5 km of shore resulting in several large permanent rips systems. The most prominent reef is backed by a low bluff, which forms the boundary with beach 1412. This high energy 4.5 km long beach has a wide 2 to 3 bar surf zone, with near continuous inner reefs permitting a rip dominated inner surf zone, including two large permanent rip embayments.
