Back beach (72) is a 500 m long southeast facing beach, protected by Cape Martin, Penguin Island and offshore reefs. It receives waves averaging 0.5 m and has a steep beach fronted by a narrow continuous bar, usually free of rips. The main fishing boat ramp crosses the eastern end of the beach, with a large car park behind the dune.
The Back beach and the small Town beaches are relatively safe, away from the boats, and under normal low wave conditions. Higher waves produce a heavy shorebreak and rips against the groynes. The Surf beach is moderately safe close inshore on the bar. Stay clear of the rips which can extend a considerable distance out across the 100 to 200 m wide surf zone.
Surf Beach is the most accessible and popular spot and offers a wide low gradient surf zone , with usually 1 to 1.5 m high spilling breakers. There are also many kilometres of usually empty surf down the beach toward Southend. During big swell there is a right hander in Beachport.
There are many options at Beachport. The jetty is extremely popular, as is fishing from small boats in the bay and over the inner reefs. In addition there is rock fishing off the groynes and the Cape, and beach fishing along Surf Beach.
A very popular summer town offering sufficient facilities for the traveller, set in a picturesque town and physical setting.Read less
