While Whyalla is renown for its iron ore processing, it does have three beaches located between the main jetties and the southern mangroves (Fig. 4.109). Right under the main jetty is a 70 m long pocket of sand (594) that has accumulated between the jetty seawall and the backing low bluffs of Hummock Hill. On the southern side of the small 40 m high hill is a second 80 m long pocket of sand wedged between the hill and the 300 m long rock jetty that is part of the boat launching area, which includes the small beach (595). Both beaches are fronted by 100 to 200 m wide ridged sand flats, while there is a large car park behind the boat ramp beach.
