Beach T 837 commences on the northern side of the southern rocks and where the Italian River usually reaches the shore after it is deflected 500 m to the south. It trends to the northwest for 1 km to a 200 m long section of rocks and inner reefs. The beach is exposed to the full force of the waves and winds and usually has an inner bay dominated by 2 to 3 large rips and an outer bar lying up to 500 m offshore. Active dunes rising to 40 m and deflated surfaces extend up to 1 km inland, where they impound a wetland at the base of the vegetated slopes that rise to 60 m. Beach T 838 continues on the northern side of the rocks for another 400 m to the lee of a low reef-tied sandy foreland that is awash during high waves and forms the southern boundary of Johnsons Bay. The beach is fronted by the continuous surf zone from the Italian River, with rocks and reefs dominant to either end. It shares the active dunes with beach T 837.
