The southern end of Sandy Cape Beach (T 849) commences in lee of Sandy Cape and Bare Rock, in a moderately sheltered north-facing section of beach called Venables Corner where waves average about 1-1.5 m and maintain a single transverse bar with rips spaced about every 400 m inducing a highly rhythmic shoreline. The 3.7 km long beach curves to the northeast and finally north to terminate at the shifting mouth of the North Pedder River. The beach is backed initially by vegetated dunes, then a 1.5 km area of active transverse dunes backed by vegetated dunes then a 20 ha wetland that links with the river. The river is deflected 800 m to the north of the wetland to finally enter the sea on the northern side of a 500 m long vegetated foredune. The beach in the vicinity of the mouth varies considerably owing to the deflection of the mouth and the stage of river flow. When blocked it forms a shallow lagoon, which banks upstream for a few hundred metres. There are vehicle tracks to the beach and a fishing shack on the south side of the river mouth.
Beach Length: 3.7km
