The southern half of Sawyers Bay is bordered by the two relatively long straight Black River and Peggs beaches. Black River Beach (T 992) commences as a 1.5 km long 100 m wide spit on the southern side of East Inlet and trends relatively straight to the southeast for a total of 5.5 km to the 200 m wide Black River mouth (Fig. 4.216). The beach faces northeast and is well exposed to north through easterly wind waves, which average over 1 m and maintain a low gradient 400-500 m wide ultradissipative beach. The beach is backed by a 500 m wide well developed series of eight foredune ridges, then backbarrier flats, with 350 ha East Inlet backing the northern half of the barrier and 60 ha Black River mouth the southern section. The barrier has been partly cleared for farming. There is a privately owned vehicle track along the northern side of Black River, which provides a farm access lane on private property to the beach.
Beach Length: 5.5km
General Hazard Rating: 6/10
