Beach T 971 commences on the southern side of Shoal Inlet entrance and trends to the east for 1.5 km finally curving to the northeast in lee of the small Clump Island. The narrow, crenulate high tide beach is fronted by both partly vegetated and clear sand tidal flats extending up to 2 km northward, with the inlet channel cutting across the western flats. Beach T 972 commences in lee of Clump Island and trends to the southeast and then south into the 700 m wide shallow entrance to Welcome Inlet. This is a similar narrow crenulate, high tide beach fronted by the continuous 2 km wide flats, with the deep Welcome Inlet tidal channel located 300 m east of the end of the beach. Both beaches are backed by a 2 km wide beach ridge plain consisting of more than 20 low ridges, which splay to the east. The plain, called the Welcome Heath, was developed in the mid-Holocene and has since been stranded by a slight fall in relative sea level and the development of the sand flats. Most of the ridges have been cleared and the area drained for farming.
