Big Beach (T 698) is located in the northeastern corner of the open Elliott Bay, at the mouth of the Little Rocky River. The bay marks a major inflection as the north-trending coast turns and trends west for 8 km to Low Rocky Point. The beach is located right at the junction of the inflection and extends for 700 m between south-trending rocky coast to the south and west-trending rocky shore to the north. The river reaches the rear of the centre of the beach and is deflected south to exit over the beach and against the southern rocks (Fig. 4.138). The beach faces into the prevailing waves and winds and has an exposed 300 m wide double bar system. The inner bar usually has rips running out against the rocks at either end, while the outer bar tends to be drained by one large southern rip. The river flow destabilises the southern half of the beach which consists of 200 m of bare sand and creek flats extending back to the river, while the northern half is backed by a climbing foredune extending 150 m inland in the centre and decreasing in width to the north. Older well vegetated dunes extend 1.5 km south of the beach behind the neighbouring rocky shore and blanket the backing rocky slopes up to 500 m inland.
