Towterer Beach occupies an open 1.5 km long west-facing embayment, with low densely vegetated rocky points to either side. The main beach T 684 curves to the north for 1.5 km and is exposed to the full force of the westerly waves and winds. The waves maintain a 300 m wide double bar system, with an inner transverse bar usually cut by four rips, including a rip against the northern rocks. The outer bar only breaks when waves exceed 2 m and is drained by two large rips. The beach is backed by a 20 m high unstable foredune breached by several blowouts including a large southern blowout extending 400 m inland (Fig. 4.135). In addition older well vegetated transgressive dunes extend up to 6 km to the southeast reaching up to 120 m in height. They are part of an 800 ha now largely well vegetated transgressive dune system. To the east of the dunes the De Witt Range rises to over 400 m. The Towterer Creek runs along the northern side of the dunes to reach the northern end of the beach where it forms a small lagoon. It is then deflected down the beach sometimes exiting half way down the beach and inducing further beach and foredune instability.
