Maitland Bay is an open 1 km wide, north-facing bay located between the western head and Stony Head. Beach T 1201 curves around the base of the bay for 1 km and is exposed to slightly reduced westerly waves, which average over 1 m. The waves maintain a 100 m wide low tide bar, usually cut by two central beach rips, with permanent rips against the rocks at either end (Fig. 4.270). A range road runs out to the western end of the beach, which is backed by vegetated foredune, then older dune-covered basalt slopes, which rise to 90 m at the head. A small creek and wetland run along the rear of the foredune and drain across the centre of the beach.
Beach Length: 1km
General Hazard Rating: 6/10
