The eastern section of Prion Beach (T 577) commences against the inner 130 m high slopes of Point Cecil and trends west to the lagoon mouth, which is usually a few tens of metres wide as it cuts across the beach. The mouth can shift from against the eastern rock, where it links with Milford Creek, to as far as 1 km west along the beach. In between the shifting entrance maintains a 1 km long, 200-300 m wide zone of bare beach backed by the active or inactive channel (Fig. 4.117), with a well vegetated foredune on the northern side of the inlet. The walking track follows the crest of this dune to the crossing located 2.5 km along the inlet. The inlet extends west for a total of 4 km before opening into 1,200 ha New Lagoon. It extends north for 6.5 km to the New River delta and averages 2 km in width. The lagoon occupies a fault with steep slopes rising to 850 m on the west and more gently sloping terrain to the east.
