Beaches BI 39 and 40 are located on the western side of the narrows and face into D’Entrecasteaux Channel, receiving only low refracted swell travelling up the channel and westerly wind waves. They occupy a 500 m wide west-facing bay called Southerly Bight. Hopwood Beach (BI 39) is a curving 300 m long west-facing sandy reflective beach bordered by rocky shores rising to 40 m Hopwood Point in the south, and low rocks in the north. It is backed by a small area of vegetated dunes behind the northern end of the beach. Beach BI 40 commences on the northern side of the rocks and curves to the north as a double crenulate recurved spit, sitting on a rock base, with rocks located to the south and off the centre of the beach. The beach is fronted by a narrow band of rock flats and backed by a 20 ha wetland, which has been partly impounded by the spit. The northern rock-tied tip of the beach forms the southern side of the narrows.
