Beaches BI 22 and 23 are east-facing beaches located in two adjoining indentations in Haulage Bay, a 1 km wide embayment located in the southern half of the Bay of Islands and bordered by Grays and Mangana bluffs. Beach BI 22 lies at the base of 400 m high Daveys Hill, with the old railway line halfway up the hill. The beach is 50 m long with high tide cobbles grading into boundary rocks and boulders. It has an 80 m wide sand and rocky surf zone with a rip usually forming against the northern rocks. Beach BI 23 lies 200 m to the south and is a similar 150 m long high tide cobble beach and 50 m wide sand and rock-strewn surf zone. It is backed by steep densely vegetated slopes with a bare 100 m high cliff at the southern end.
