The southern Birchs Point forms the northern boundary of 2.5 km wide Birchs Bay, an open east-facing embayment, divided into two by the central Yellow Point. Beach T 490 occupies 300 m of the northern half of the bay. It is a 200 m long southeast-facing narrow high tide sand and cobble beach with 100 m wide sand and rock flats. The highway runs right along the rear of the beach.
