Isthmus Bay is a 5 km wide U-shaped north-facing bay located between Simpsons Point and Porpoise Head. It western shore is formed by a 2.5 km long dolerite peninsula that terminates at Simpsons Point, while its eastern shore is the low energy rear of Neck Beach (BI 12). The two beaches BI 73 and 12 form either side of the sandy isthmus (Fig. 4.110), which links North and South Bruny. The eastern isthmus beach (B 73) commences in the southern area called Simpsons Bay, 500 m east of the mouth and wetlands of Simpsons Creek. At this point the isthmus is 1 km wide, with a wetland between the two beaches. The beach curves for 8 km to the northeast where the isthmus narrows to 100 m, then north and finally east in lee of the northern boundary 15 m high Porpoise Head. At this point the isthmus widens to 1 km, with Gibbs Lagoon and associated wetland separating the two beaches.
